Darren Engleman´s large, colorful paintings are elaborately detailed abstracted interpretations of subjects from the natural world, usually flowers and animals and occasionally, the human figure. Layers of translucent acrylic paint give these works vibrant color and are often combined with vintage collage materials such as newspapers, maps, textbooks, musical scores or children’s books. This weaving subtly reveals layers of interest in our shared meaning-making tools, especially science, language, philosophy, spirituality and history. Intricate patterns, geometry, quotations and even original poetry emerge from intuitively exploring the intersection of abstraction and representation.
