Thistles are beautiful. I’m often fascinated by living things that balance delicate beauty with hard edges, spines and toughness. Asteraceae. Horses apparently like them too. Artichokes are wonderful members of the family. The title comes from the German quote in the center. I am often intrigued by how much of our lives we spend with our minds in the past or in the future, dominated often by personal judgement or fear. The only thing we are ever certain of is the present moment. The Spanish quote is a thought about the amazing nature of everything that exists, and a commentary on our tendency to forget about that. Many people have also asked about the significance of the number 432,902. that was the number of hours I estimated that I had lived up to that moment when I was painting this.
