An expectation of complexity

Acrylic painting on canvas titled An expectation of complexity. The subject is a Saguaro cactus, Carnegiea Gigantea. 53×53 inches, 135×135 cm, unframed. SOLD.

Saguaro cactus are truly an iconic species in the Sonoran desert. They represent the resilience of all forms of life, and their strength to survive in what seems to us to be the harshest of environments is encouraging in our time when the entire biosphere is enduring rapid changes. All life on Earth is spectacular. These amazing beings remind us of that. There are some references within the painting that deserve extra attention:

The three words, chaos, entropy and equilibrium are references to the three laws of thermodynamics, which underly all of the physical sciences and are inescapable in any understanding of the universe we inhabit.

There are two numbers, 37 and 73. these are the 12th and 21st prime numbers. 3 and 7 are both prime numbers, and 37 and 73 are emirps( prime numbers that are also prime when the digits are reversed). In gematria, a form of numerology that assigns numerical values and significance to Hebrew letters, the number 37 is associated with life, and the number 73 is associated with peace.
